Style

All of us can change our behavior to fit different situations. When we speak with close friends, we are free to interrupt them and we will not be offended if they interrupt us. When speaking to employers, however, we are inclined to communicate with them politely. If we don't make such adjustments, we are likely to get into trouble and sure to be considered ill-mannered. Language is behavior and it is part of the way we act. Like other kinds of behavior, it must be adjusted to fit to different contexts of situations where it is used. When we think of the adjustments any one person makes in different situations, we use the term style. In a letter to an intimate friend, an informal language style is appropriate, while in writing a paper to be published, a formal style is more appropriate and preferable. In this unit we will learn to use a formal style in academic writing.
